John Street Social is a series of weekly Friday night club socials hosted by different artists each week with visuals and audio to share. The format: decks, laptop, and a limited number of selected youtube clips of archive footage and informative curiosities... Bison Kitchen will be our resident chefs.

Back with improved lighting these are informal, untutored, drop-in classes available for all levels of students. Please bring all your own equipment. We have a good mixture of models, both female and male.

Throughout October and November, Bison Kitchen are going to be keeping us well fed! They’re here on Friday evenings and Saturday daytime at John Street but also hosting our Members Supper and providing food at the Goods Shed events including Sunday lunch sessions on the last sunday of each month. For those who are unfamiliar... they’re the Cotswold’s original peddler of American street food. Specialising in real American BBQ and southern soul food, taking the freshest of local British produce and give it the ol’ stars and stripes treatment!

Jacqueline Kroft & The Sensations
Fundraiser for Syrian Refugees 

Thursday 1st October 8pm

Jacqueline Kroft is a classically trained jazz singer/songwriter, pianist and composer based in Stroud. We welcome her back to the SVA with her all new line up (Robert Holmes, Josef Kaspar, Senan Robinson) to play songs from their new album and help raise money for Syrian Refugees. “Living with a Ghost’ will be out before Christmas.

All of the tickets sales will be donated to help Syrian refugees.

The Line Gallery's debut exhibition 'Cut and Stick' explores the diverse medium of collage. Collage, defined as an assemblage of diverse fragments in  juxtaposition to one another.  This exhibition aims to create a dialogue around this subject. Artists include Lucy Irwin, Ben Lewis Giles, Sean Heather, James Green and Jude Tedaldi.

Disco Sucks

Saturday 3rd October 9pm - 3am

Lose yourself in the smoke and light as Disco Sucks returns to the SVA. The full crew will be in attendance, Rosco, Deano, B'Man & Tim, plus Black Box soundsystem.

This event is likely to sell out so grab your tickets from Trading Post to avoid disappointment!

Stroud Jazz Sessions presents Kevin Figes

Thursday 8th October 8.30pm - 11pm

Our favourite special guest who is absolutely bebop-squiggly-tastic and has appeared more times than anyone - it’s none other than Kevin Figes. 

Kevin is a fine saxophonist from Bristol, appearing prolifically with his Quartet or Octet and showing a growing penchant for Latin to mix in with his well-tuned ear for bop. Kevin’s playing soars and dives and always entertains. It’s a delight to have him back!

Camilo Esteban Martinez take us on a Journey through South American Cumbia sounds from it’s roots in slavery and indigenous music of Peru and Colombia to it’s present use in electronica and hip hop.

Mr Fluffypunk’s Penny Gaff featuring John Osbourne and Molly Naylor

We've reached number 10! A birthday of sorts. And our Autumnal Penny Gaff is gonna be a good 'un, featuring a Stroud stop on the little tour of John Osborne and Molly Naylor...

John Osborne and Molly Naylor are two of this country's most innovative and original voices. For the past five years they have both been performing poetry and theatre shows and they decided to come out on tour together. Come and hear a selection of their best material; accessible, funny, life-affirming poetry and stories from the creators of John Peel's Shed and Sky 1's After Hours.

SVA Members Supper Club

These regular supper clubs bring members together in a convivial atmosphere hosted by specially chosen culinary experts… for this super club: A night of Latin American cuisine hosted by Bison Kitchen:

ListenIn - Poetry Slam

Slam poetry champion Eley Furrell hosts ListenIn poetry punch-up round 2! Featuring contenders from Notts, Ash Dickenson and Simone Estridge. From the south-west the Bristol belter Angie Belcher and the counties own Prime Position. From another world comes the Cardiff clubber, Zaru Jonson. Join us to see which of these wordy heavy-weights is last standing.

John Street Blues with Thee Ones

Monthly blues night with a full set from invited guest plus open mic, archive foot- age and blues on vinyl. This month: Thee Ones - raised on a diet of Dr John, The Meters and Captain Beef- heart - they’re all about the groove. If you are a musician with a blues song that you feel needs to be heard then just turn up and find a slot somewhere in the evening!

Hot Brew present the John Street Social Club special

‘Hot Brew’ are Oona and Crispin Wheatflake; a folk duo who’ve taken to the stage, after ten years’ absence, to bring their own blend of nonny song and New Age ‘wisdom’ to the people once more. (Played by none other than Alice Lowe  and Antony Elvin.) They’re bringing their spoof folk duo to you... so come and have your root gently tugged! They will also be showing some short films and spinning some vinyl!!

Due to the success of Jet Set Radio 001 we have decided to move to the fabulous Brunel Goods Shed for the best in live dance music and DJs in Stroud.

Bands/DJs: Dollhouse, Emlyn, New Carnival, Benson, El Rewind Take Over

Will Harpers Kitchen will be hosting Bait Supper Club serving cuts from the grill. Romy, Harriet & John will be provid-
ing wood-fired oven pizzas. And Bison Kitchen will be serving up some BBQ!

Bison Kitchen is the Cotswold’s original peddler of fine American street food. Specialising in American street food, real American BBQ and southern soul food, they take the freshest of local British produce and give it the ol’ stars and stripes treatment.

Their real American chef ‘Cookie’ likes nothing better than to slowly smoke a big slab of meat and serve it up with some U.S. of A classics like Mac 'n' Cheese or soft fluffy cornbread. Drop in to the Goods Shed for some home comfort food and some chilled Sunday tunes.

Bandit

BandiT is a three day rock and pop workshop for 40 students aged 8 to 17 held at Maiden Hill Scool. Students throughout the community come together to form bands and to be creative in writing, recording and performing.The prime function of the workshop is to give young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to gain experience in musicianship, creative song writing, recording techniques and performance skills.

Come at watch the final performance at SVA Goods Shed!

Miserable Poets Café

Thursday 29th October 8pm

Miserable Poets’ Cafe – the Open Mic’ night purely for miserable poems - returns with the same rules as before: “No Positivity”, “No Glimmers of Hope” and “No Looking on the Bright Side”. This is your chance to read your most depressing poems to an appreciative audience, and is hosted by Stroud’s resident poet of the morose, Miserable Malcolm. 

As usual, there will be prizes for the most disheartening poems, opportunities to mingle with other disconsolate souls, and a selection of dispiriting spirits and whines at the bar. There will also be a melancholic performance by Uta Baldauf.

So dig out your poems of heartbreak, agony and existential angst and share the despair at Miserable Poets’ Cafe.

Artist and permaculture practitioner Dominic Thomas has designed and built a sustainable urban micro-farm in which oyster mushrooms are cultivated on spent coffee grounds from local cafes. Fungusloci is a project of Sustainable Creativity CIC with the help of Stroud District Food Grants.
